"I've always wanted to play drums, but I'm 40 — isn't it too late?" This is one of the most common questions we get. The answer is no. And the people who ask it are often the ones who end up being the most dedicated students.
Fact: Neuroplasticity — the brain's ability to form new connections — is not age-dependent. Adults who start drum lessons later in life build measurable improvements in coordination and attention within six weeks.
What adult beginner lessons actually look like
When an adult starts with us, the first thing we do is listen. What do you want to play? What music moves you? What do you actually want to get out of this? There's no standard curriculum that gets applied to everyone.
Adults learn differently from children. You understand quickly why something works the way it does. You can connect what you're learning to music you already know. That's a genuine advantage. The challenge is usually patience with yourself — adults tend to be harder on themselves than children are.
One thing we focus on from the start: getting you to actually play music. Not exercises for six months and then music. We mix technique and playing from lesson one. You'll leave the first lesson having played along with a groove, even if it's simple.
Practical things you should know
You don't need a drum kit at home — at least not to start. Many adult beginners practise on a practice pad (a rubber pad you put on a table, costs around €25) for the first few months. Once you have a feel for whether this is for you, we can advise on instruments.
Evening and weekend slots available. We know you have a job and a life. Lessons are scheduled at times that work with your schedule.
First lesson is free. Always. No subscription needed upfront. Come in, meet the teacher, sit behind the kit, and see if it feels right.
Why adults often make great students
You show up. You practise. You know what you want. Most adult students come to us because they've been putting it off for years and finally decided to stop putting it off. That motivation is real, and it shows in how fast they progress.
We have students in their 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond. One of our longest-running students started at 68 and is still playing weekly at 72. There's no age limit.
